Mick, of French origin, arrived on Lanzarote in 1988 and quickly decided to remain there. Until this moment he had worked various materials like resin, plexiglass, wood, stone, plaster and metal. With Steelart Mick Gonnel carries out true art of reciclage. To make his sculptures he uses the wrecks and remains of boats, cars, machines, pumps, bicycles… All metal. The parts are not modified, they keep their original shape. The idea to create this art came from the discharges which one finds everywhere on the island. It is a solution for the problem of the discharge which accumulates in the craters of the island.
Mick sold up to now about 2.500 pieces, large and small, which are now in several countries in the whole world. He continues to create faces, symbols, images which emerge in his imagination whilst assembling these remains. The buddies have the practice of providing Mick with the parts which they find scattered on the island everywhere, thus taking part in the “cleaning” of the island. In each sculpture one sees the innate humour of Mick. All the faces speak and give their message
